How many photos can I put on a Photo Quilt?

This depends on the quilt size and design, as well as the size of the photos. Discuss your needs with Legacy Quilts when you Contact Us.

Can I use images from slides or negatives?

Yes.  Legacy Quilts can transfer images from your slides or negatives into usable digital formats.

Can I use old photos?

Yes, in some cases.  Any photo having a clear image will work.  In all cases, blurry or out of focus photos are not recommended.  If your original photographs are very old, cracked, stained or damaged they will not produce a clear scanned image, and they also may not withstand handling.  In these cases, you should seek professional photographic assistance to restore and/or scan them properly before submission to Legacy Quilts.

Do photos all have to be the same size?

No, photo sizes can vary.  Photos can be enlarged or reduced to fit your quilt, or depending on the quilt design, random sizes of photos may be appropriate.  Using photos larger than 8x10 is not recommended.  Photo manipulation and editing beyond basic transfer will incur additional charges.

Can I send non-fabric items (photos/artwork/documents) digitally?

You may send your original photos, artwork, and documents to us for scanning and transfer to fabric in any format you prefer.

  • If you’d prefer to send them in hard copy …
    • Send items in an unbendable envelope packed carefully with your other fabrics. Be sure to enclose the envelope/photos in a sealed ZipLoc-type bag for added security from moisture.
    • To ease communications, label each item with your name and a title (ie.John's b-day with cake).  Add a sticky-note if you don’t want to write directly on the item.
    • All items will be returned in the condition in which they were received.
  • If you’d prefer to send digital files or photo CDs …
    • Save each scanned photo at the largest physical size that will be used in your quilt (5”x 7” to be safe, or 8”x10” max.) using a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch) [600 dpi, preferred], especially if the image may be resized.  Save as TIFF or JPEG files.
    • Label each file with a descriptive text name (i.e. “the cabin in fall”, “grandma with cake”, or “bringing baby home”).  If emailing, please include your full name in the body of the email.
    • If you are non-technical, sending hard-copies or images on a CD with quilt materials or via regular mail is a more viable option.
    • Hard-copy photographs and CDs will be returned upon project completion.
  •  Please do not send any items prior to consultation with Legacy Quilts.

Should clothing or t-shirts be cut before they are sent to Legacy Quilts?

No. To achieve maximum use of every fabric item, clothing (especially,                                                                                                          t-shirts) should NOT be cut before they are shipped.   If t-shirts are pre-cut, additional ‘repair’ fees may apply.   See our T-Shirt Quilt Guide for additional information and guides.

Can sports jerseys, sweatshirts, shorts or windbreakers be used in T-Shirt Quilts?

Yes.  If they have printed areas, they will be handled in the same manner as regular t-shirts, utilizing the primary printed area of each garment as a ‘block’ in your quilt.  Note:  using these items may affect the ultimate washability of your quilt.

What kinds of ‘art’ work best in a KinderQuilt?

Any medium is acceptable, as long as it has clear colors and lines.  Scribbles, lines, shapes and bright colors produce the best quilted results.

  • The size of each item is limited to legal size (8 1/2” x 14”).  If your item is larger but has a central image that will fit completely or in part on a 8 ½” x 14” area, it can still be used successfully .
  • Artwork that will smudge or smear in transit (like chalk or pastels) should be packaged carefully or have a clear spray-on fixative applied before shipping.  Ask your local art or craft store for help.

Will my photos or artwork be harmed in anyway?

No.  Items are scanned and used digitally.  Your original photos, artwork, and other memorabilia are unharmed and will be returned to you in the condition in which they were received.
